Calabria - Southern Italy

Calabria - An introduction

Calabria is the southernmost region of the Italian 'boot', also referred to as the Mediterranean's best kept secret. Meandering through Calabria is as good as stepping back in time, recently discovered as a tourist Ancient remains, quaint villages and humbling churches adorn the enchanting region of Calabria. Fringed with long white beaches and clear seas, it's totally unspoiled and just waiting to be discovered.Remote and rugged “Calabria” is a world away from the Baroque churches, lavish art galleries and gently rolling hills of traditional Italy, Calabria offers a very different experience, unspoiled at its best, immense charm and successfully retaining a real sense of ‘southern’ authenticity without mass tourism or modernization. Wandering through its towns and villages you are just as likely to meet a flock of sheep in village alleyways as you are an Alfa Romeo. Whilst sparsely populated and slightly impoverished, Calabria is, however, rich in natural beauty, idyllic beaches and fascinating historical sights that simply demand investigation.  Calabria boasts of fabulous mountain ranges that give way to deep caves and dramatic valleys cloaked in woods of deep green pine forests. Calabria’s vast seaboard, meanwhile, plays host to a collage of tranquil sandy bays and hideaway grottoes.

 Beaches

Jagged cliffs tumble down into the cobalt blue sea offering exclusive beaches to relax or jet ski in the inviting waters. Towering castles and building steeped in history look down on quiet hidden coves and family orientated beaches. Dramatic cliffs, rocky grottoes and turquoise seas, ideal for snorkeling or lazing away the sunny days.

Cuisine

Calabria is all about good old fashion Italian cuisine. Glorious sunshine provides a fine climate to encourage the Calabrese people to cultivate superb fresh produce. Delicious red chillies, ripe tomatoes, shining aubergines, polished green peppers, red onion and rustic garlic hanging from green grocer’s doorway…..the fine ingredients found in the local cooking of this wonderful part of Italy. Spicy meat sausages, vegetable soup and freshly made pasta with sauces and local wine, together with hot crusty bread are just some of the wonderful delights to be found in Calabria.

 Shopping

Unlike other regions of Italy, Calabria isn’t renowned for an array of designer clothes shops, rather offers some of the amazing gastronomic souvenirs to take back home. Olives, balsamic vinegar, honey and local wine, just to name a few. Beautifully presented curiosity shops; with a wide range of local good quality shoes,  linen suits and dresses, not forgetting local handy craft ware.
